In 2009, Boston College's music community underwent a transformative change when Earl Edwards, a student at the time, recognized the need for an R&B-focused a cappella group. This initiative led to the creation of B.E.A.T.S., which stands for Black Experience in America Through Song. The group has since become an integral part of campus life, offering a platform for Black artistry and fostering a unique sense of community. Over the years, B.E.A.T.S. has grown both in membership and recognition, with its performances resonating deeply with audiences. Today, the group continues to thrive under the leadership of dedicated students who are committed to preserving and expanding its mission.
The inception of B.E.A.T.S. was driven by a desire to fill a void in Boston College’s musical landscape. Inspired by similar groups at other institutions, Edwards saw an opportunity to bring this form of expression to BC. Despite not being a singer himself, he took the initiative to recruit students who shared his vision. Together, they established the group’s identity and laid the foundation for what B.E.A.T.S. would become. Victoria Adegboyega, now a junior and president of B.E.A.T.S., joined the group as a freshman and has witnessed its growth firsthand. From a small ensemble to a thriving organization of 14 members, B.E.A.T.S. has expanded significantly over the past two years.
One of the highlights of B.E.A.T.S.’s calendar is the annual Black History Month Showcase, held earlier this year. This event brings together the group’s efforts throughout the semester, culminating in a powerful performance that celebrates Black culture and history. The preparation for these shows involves meticulous planning and practice. Alongside her co-musical directors, Adegboyega ensures that each performance is polished and emotionally resonant. They focus on conveying the emotions tied to the Black experience while making the music accessible to all audiences. The group’s commitment to emotional depth and authenticity sets them apart from other a cappella ensembles.
Beyond their musical endeavors, the members of B.E.A.T.S. also play key roles in managing the group’s operations. Toni Martin, the treasurer, oversees financial matters, ensuring that resources are used effectively for daily activities and events. Meanwhile, Rose Dieujuste, the social media director, leverages digital platforms to enhance the group’s visibility and attract new talent. Social media plays a crucial role in B.E.A.T.S.’s recruitment strategy, allowing them to connect with potential members before auditions. The group’s success lies not only in individual talent but in their collective chemistry and support for one another.
The essence of B.E.A.T.S. extends far beyond the stage. Members emphasize the importance of holistic care, focusing on each person’s well-being—academically, physically, and emotionally. Weekly bonding activities help strengthen relationships within the group, creating a supportive environment where everyone feels valued. This sense of community is what truly distinguishes B.E.A.T.S. from other musical groups. While music may have brought them together, it is the unwavering support and camaraderie that keep them united. B.E.A.T.S. exemplifies the spirit of cura personalis, caring for the whole person, and continues to inspire both its members and the broader Boston College community.
