For decades, BMW has alternated between its 6 Series and 8 Series flagship coupes, seldom offering both simultaneously for extended periods. Recent speculation suggested the current 8 Series might cease production to make way for a new 6 Series. While the latter remains uncertain, it is confirmed that the current 8 Series will conclude its production run next year. Prior to this, a unique special edition of the 8 Series is slated for release this year, potentially serving as the ultimate collector's item for this distinguished GT line.
With the high-performance M8 already out of production, the forthcoming special edition will build upon the formidable M850i. This information comes from a recent interview with BMW M Boss, Frank van Meel, conducted by Bimmer Today. The interview, originally in German, confirms the strategic decision to base this exclusive model on the M850i. It remains to be seen whether this special treatment will extend to all three M850i body styles: the Coupe, Convertible, and Gran Coupe. Regardless, expectations are high for bespoke interior and exterior enhancements, unique color options, and additional premium features. While performance upgrades are less likely, the M850i's already potent 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 engine delivers a robust 523 horsepower, enabling it to reach 60 mph in a mere 3.6 seconds, ensuring an exhilarating driving experience. Given the base M850i Coupe's starting price of $109,400, this special 8 Series is expected to command a price well into six figures.
According to van Meel, this special 8 Series isn't the only limited-run vehicle BMW has in store for the remainder of the year. He hinted at \"a few other things happening\" without disclosing specific details. The 3 Series, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, is a strong candidate for a special edition, with variants already seen in markets such as Australia. Additionally, the X5, X7, and Z4, which have been in their current generations for a considerable time, could also receive special editions to boost consumer interest. The Z4 is currently projected to remain in production until May 2026 before its eventual discontinuation.
