The landscape of electric pickup trucks is evolving rapidly, transforming what was once a futuristic concept into a tangible reality on American roads. This analysis delves into the current competitive environment, showcasing how different manufacturers are faring in the race to electrify the utility vehicle segment.

The Dawn of Electric Trucks: A Fierce Market Emerges

The Ascent of Electric Pickups: Market Overview

The notion of electric pickup trucks seemed far-fetched not long ago, yet today, numerous models are readily available in the United States. Initial expectations suggested the Tesla Cybertruck would dominate the sector following extensive anticipation. However, recent data from the Q2 2025 Electric Vehicle Sales Report by Cox Automotive and Kelley Blue Book indicates a more diverse competitive field than initially projected. This report ranks current electric pickup truck sales, providing a clear picture of market performance in the first half of 2025, from the least to most sold.

GMC Sierra EV: Niche Market Performance

The GMC Sierra EV currently holds the fifth position in electric pickup sales for 2025, which isn't a reflection of its quality but rather its premium market positioning. Designed as an opulent alternative to its Chevrolet counterpart, the 2025 Sierra EV commanded a steep initial price of $89,900. Nonetheless, the upcoming 2026 model year promises more accessible trims, starting at $62,400 for the Elevation Standard Range, offering 283 miles of autonomy. Higher trims, like the Denali Max Range, can still exceed $100,000, boasting adaptive air suspension and an impressive 478-mile range. Industry observers anticipate a surge in Sierra EV sales as these more affordable options become available in the latter half of the year.

Rivian R1T: Balancing Innovation and Market Share

Similar to the Sierra EV, the Rivian R1T occupies the luxury end of the electric truck spectrum, with a starting price around $77,990. This investment provides 329 miles of range and a powerful dual-motor setup delivering 533 horsepower. The R1T distinguishes itself with appealing aesthetics and robust off-road capabilities. Despite its strengths, Rivian has seen a 47% year-over-year decline in sales, indicating heightened competition. A recent study suggests Rivian needs to refine its outreach to key EV buyer demographics, a crucial step for future growth.

Chevrolet Silverado EV: A Strong Contender with Broad Appeal

The Chevrolet Silverado EV has achieved approximately double the sales of its sibling, the Sierra EV. This success is partly attributable to its more competitive 2025 starting price of $73,100 for the LT Extended Range variant, which offers 408 miles of range and a sophisticated interior featuring a 17.7-inch display. While a more budget-friendly Work Truck variant is also available, primarily targeting commercial fleets, its inclusion in Chevy's mainstream configurator for 2026 at a starting price of just $52,800 is expected to further boost its market presence.

Tesla Cybertruck: High Hopes, Mixed Realities

The Cybertruck has captured significant attention, yet its sales figures, though substantial at over 10,000 units so far, reveal a 7.3% year-over-year decrease. The second quarter of 2025 proved particularly challenging, with sales plummeting by more than 50%. Beyond the broader controversies surrounding the Tesla brand and its CEO, the Cybertruck has been affected by considerable depreciation. Despite its remarkable performance and respectable 354-mile range, the Cybertruck has not fully met its ambitious sales projections.

Ford F-150 Lightning: Leading the Charge

While other electric trucks may surpass the F-150 Lightning in certain metrics like acceleration, luxury, or range, Ford has successfully replicated the F-150's dominance in the traditional pickup market within the electric segment. Despite a 16.7% year-over-year sales dip, reflecting a broader trend in EV sales, the F-150 Lightning remains the top seller. Starting at $54,780, it offers a 300-mile range and 536 horsepower in its base Pro variant, positioning it as one of the most accessible new electric trucks. Higher-tier models, such as the Platinum, can reach prices of $84,995. Ford's strategy of designing an electric pickup that closely mirrors the beloved conventional F-150 has proven effective in securing its leadership in the nascent electric truck market.

GMC Hummer EV: Unclear Market Position

The GMC Hummer EV Pickup's specific sales data are not individually reported by GM, as figures are combined for both the pickup and SUV variants. Together, these models achieved 7,987 units sold so far in 2025, marking a significant 73.7% year-over-year increase. If the pickup constituted even half of these sales, it would comfortably outperform Rivian and GMC in the individual rankings. However, without distinct sales data for each body style, the precise market standing of the Hummer EV Pickup within the competitive electric truck segment remains uncertain.
